Who are we?

Mycelia was founded in 1985 by mycologist Magda Verfaillie and food technologist Jos Van de Ponseele. In a first stage we started a small size spawn laboratory as a center for spawn-research on a university-level with a restricted spawn-production next to it. In a second stage in 1990, the current spawn laboratory was set up and has now a production capacity of 30.000 liters (ca. 20 tons) of spawn per week.
In contrast with other European spawn companies, Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus are not Mycelia’s core business. We focus on specialty mushrooms for culinary and medicinal use.

Mycelia has chosen this specialisation for following reasons:

  • As a young spawn-company, it would be unwise to interfere with the interests of large spawn producers, who mainly produce Agaricus-spawn.
  • Exotic mushrooms take a high flight nowadays, and Mycelia’s know how in the field of spawn and substrate production of difficult mushroom species is of increasing interest these days.
Mycelia rigourously keeps a large collection of strains that yield mother cultures, mother spawn and spawn which we deliver all over the world. We have an excellent reputation as a reliable supplier of fresh mycelium products of an even and impeccable quality.

Mycelia is involved in a number of R&D activities in view of the constant improvement of her production:

  • We work closely with the lab of biotechnology of KAHO St.-Lieven, in Gent. Combined research on solid state fermentations and submerged cultures is simultaneously carried out in both research laboratories.
  • We are a participant and/-or Prime Proposer in several EU- Cooperative Research Programmes, specifically focused on the understanding of the specific aspects of mycelium- and mushroom production.
  • Each newly developed type of Microsac and Microbox from the sister companies SACO2 and Combiness is tested in the laboratory of Mycelia.
